Free IMEI check before you buy a used phone

Buying a used iPhone or Android phone on eBay, Facebook Marketplace or a local classifieds site? Run a free IMEI number check first. Our IMEI lookup identifies the exact model and shows the iCloud lock, warranty, purchase date, country, SIM-lock and blacklist status — facts a seller’s photos cannot prove.

A phone reported lost or stolen is blacklisted in the GSMA global database and by carriers. In the US also check AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon: a phone with an unpaid device balance gets a “bad ESN” and will not activate on major networks, while a “clean ESN” means there are no such reports.

For iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch we also pull Apple data: Find My iPhone (FMI) on or off, iCloud status clean or lost, warranty start and end, purchase date, activation, carrier policy (Next Tether) and whether the unit is refurbished, a replacement or a store demo.

iPhone serial number check

Every Apple device has a serial number, even a Mac, Wi-Fi iPad or AirPods without an IMEI. Enter it in the same field above: the Apple serial number check starts right away and shows the model, color and storage, warranty and AppleCare status, purchase date, activation and whether the device is refurbished, a replacement or a demo unit.

Newer Apple devices use a randomized 10-character serial number, older ones 11 or 12 characters. Find it in Settings › General › About, on the original box or under the Mac.

How to check if a phone is blacklisted

A blacklist check by IMEI shows whether a phone was reported lost, stolen or unpaid. It takes less than a minute:

  1. Dial *#06# on the phone, or open Settings › General › About on iPhone (Settings › About phone on Android), and copy the IMEI.
  2. Paste the 15-digit IMEI into the IMEI check at the top of this page and confirm you are not a robot.
  3. Choose the GSMA blacklist check and the check for the phone’s carrier: AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon.
  4. “Clean” means no reports. “Blacklisted” or “blocked” means carriers will not activate the phone — do not buy it.

What is an IMEI number?

IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 15-digit number of every phone, cellular iPad and cellular smartwatch. Dual-SIM phones have two IMEIs. Carriers use the IMEI to block lost and stolen devices, which is why an IMEI number check reveals the blacklist status.

IMEI check FAQ

Is the IMEI check really free?

Yes. You get free IMEI checks every day without registration: device detection, Apple warranty info, GSMA and US carrier blacklist checks. For more checks per day, raise the limit in your account.

How do I check the IMEI number on my iPhone?

Dial *#06# and the IMEI appears on the screen, or open Settings › General › About and scroll to IMEI. On Android go to Settings › About phone. Then paste the number into the IMEI check on this page.

Can an IMEI check tell if a phone is stolen?

Yes, a blacklist check can. Phones reported lost or stolen are listed in the GSMA database and by carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. If the IMEI shows as blacklisted, do not buy the phone.

Can a blacklisted phone still be used?

It may still turn on and work over Wi-Fi, but carriers will not activate a blacklisted IMEI. Only the original owner or the carrier can remove it from the blacklist, for example after an unpaid balance is paid.

What do clean ESN and bad ESN mean?

ESN was the serial number of older CDMA phones; in US listings “ESN” now simply means the phone’s IMEI status. A clean ESN means no loss, theft or unpaid-balance reports. A bad ESN means a carrier has blacklisted the phone.

How do I check if my iPhone is unlocked?

On iPhone open Settings › General › About › Carrier Lock: “No SIM restrictions” means it is unlocked. On any phone you can also try a SIM card from another carrier. Our IMEI check shows the SIM-lock status and carrier policy.

Can I check Find My iPhone by IMEI?

Yes. The free Apple warranty & info check on this page shows Find My iPhone (FMI) ON or OFF and the iCloud status (Clean or Lost). If Find My is on, the next owner cannot activate the device without the previous owner’s Apple Account password.

How do I check iPhone warranty with IMEI or serial number?

Enter the IMEI or serial number above and choose the Apple warranty & info check. The report shows warranty start and end, repair and phone support coverage, purchase date and country, plus FMI and iCloud status.

Can I check a Samsung or Android phone by IMEI?

Yes. The IMEI check works for Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, Xiaomi and other Android phones: it detects the model and offers blacklist, carrier and brand warranty checks.

What is the difference between IMEI and serial number?

The IMEI is a 15-digit number of the cellular module. The serial number is Apple’s own 10–12 character code and also works for devices without a SIM, like Mac and Wi-Fi iPad.

Why does it say my IMEI is invalid?

A valid IMEI has exactly 15 digits and passes a checksum. Check for typos, remove spaces, or enter the serial number instead.

Is it safe to share my IMEI?

Checking an IMEI does not give anyone access to your phone, Apple Account or data. Still, avoid posting it publicly together with photos of the device.
