Check if a Phone Is Blacklisted

Find out if a phone is reported lost or stolen, blocked for an unpaid bill or still on a carrier loan. Enter the IMEI once and run the worldwide GSMA check or the AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon checks for US phones.

What is an IMEI blacklist?

Every phone has a unique IMEI number. When a phone is reported lost or stolen, or when the owner stops paying for it, the carrier adds its IMEI to a blacklist. A blacklisted phone cannot make calls or use mobile data on the networks that share this list, even with a new SIM card and after a factory reset.

There are two kinds of blacklists. The GSMA IMEI database is shared by operators in many countries, so a phone reported stolen in one country can be blocked in another. US carriers also keep their own lists: AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon block phones for unpaid bills and financed devices too (a bad ESN). Check both before you buy a used phone, before you order an unlock and right after an online purchase.

Which blacklist check do I need?

All four checks are free. If you are not sure, start with GSMA, then add the check of the US carrier the phone came from.

Blacklist statuses explained

  1. Clean – the IMEI is not reported lost or stolen and has no unpaid balance. The phone can be activated.
  2. Blacklisted (lost or stolen) – the owner or the carrier reported the phone. It is blocked on the networks that share the list.
  3. Unpaid balance or fraud – the carrier blocked the phone because the account was not paid. Only the account owner can clear it.
  4. Financed (LOAN) – the phone is still being paid off. It is not blocked now but can be blacklisted if the payments stop.

IMEI blacklist check: questions and answers

How do I know if a phone is blacklisted?

Enter the 15-digit IMEI on this page and run the GSMA check; for a phone from the USA also run the AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon check. Clean means the phone is not reported; Blacklisted or Unpaid means it is blocked.

What is the difference between the GSMA and a carrier blacklist?

The GSMA database is international and is fed by operators in many countries. AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon keep their own lists that also block phones with unpaid bills or loans, so a phone can be clean in GSMA and still blocked by a US carrier.

Does a factory reset or a new SIM remove a phone from the blacklist?

No. The block is tied to the IMEI, not to the SIM card or the software. Only the carrier that blacklisted the phone can remove it, usually at the request of the account owner.

Can I use a blacklisted phone?

It works over Wi-Fi, but calls and mobile data are blocked on the networks that share the list. A phone blocked by a US carrier may still work in some other countries. Do not buy a blacklisted phone unless the seller can clear it.

Is the IMEI blacklist check free?

Yes. The GSMA, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon checks are free and need no registration. Guests get several checks per day; an account raises the limit and turns off ads.

Is it safe to share my IMEI?

An IMEI identifies the device, not you. It cannot be used to unlock the phone or access your data. Do not share passwords or your account login with anyone.
